How to use Hush Line with Proton Mail
Easily make your secure tips seamlessly work with the leading encrypted email provider
Proton offers an open-source, private productivity suite that many journalists, businesses, and human rights defenders choose as their home for their digital data. Initially created by the team at CERN, they needed an encrypted and trustworthy email provider but couldn’t find any that met their needs.
There are two ways to use Hush Line with Proton: 1.) Import your Proton key to Hush Line to secure your messages with a PGP key you already use, and 2.) Import your key and forward messages to your Proton account. We recommend the latter because it seamlessly integrated into Proton Mail, automatically decrypting messages in your inbox.
Prerequisites
- A Proton Mail address.
- A Hush Line account.
Step 1: Import your key
Proton offers an API that allows us to import your public encryption key into Hush Line. Just enter your Proton address in the search field in the Email & Encryption tab in your Hush Line settings.
Step 2: Forward messages to Proton
With your key now imported, toggle the Enable Forwarding setting and enter your Proton email address.
Test it out
After your settings are updated, go to your Profile page in Hush Line and send yourself a test message. You’ll see that it encrypts in your browser before sending. You’ll find that message in your Hush Line and Proton Mail inboxes. Since Hush Line does not have your private encryption key, neither we nor an attacker with access to our server can decrypt it. But since your private key does exist in Proton, you’ll notice that the message is readable there.
🎉 Congratulations
You just finished setting up the easiest-to-use tip line on the market! We hope you enjoy the product, and if you have any feedback, drop it to us on Hush Line!
