For those concerned about digital privacy in today’s political climate, brace yourself for a wave of FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) from companies aiming to scare you into compliance. But you don’t have to get caught up in the panic — instead, here are simple, usable tools to help you gain control.

Passwords & Two Factor

Apple

If you use Apple products, their Passwords app is integrated right into the OS. It handles password management, two-factor authentication, password sharing, and strong password suggestions. For anyone in Apple’s ecosystem, this is a no-brainer.

Cross-Platform

Proton Pass is a free, open-source password manager from Proton — the Swiss company behind Proton Mail. It’s cross-platform, with apps for Android, iOS, and browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari. Great for Android users or those outside Apple’s ecosystem who want secure, flexible management.

Email

Cross-Platform

There are two constants in life: change and email. Tired of ad-based email? Proton Mail is a solid, free, privacy-focused alternative that won’t mine your data. It’s also open-source, so you can trust its claims. Whether on your computer or mobile, it’s a clean option for private email.

Texting & Calling

Apple

Apple’s default options for messaging (iMessage) and calls (FaceTime) offer strong end-to-end encryption between Apple devices, making secure communication straightforward for Apple users.

Cross-Platform

For cross-platform secure messaging, Signal remains the gold standard. It’s open-source, non-profit, and uses encryption protocols trusted worldwide. While Signal’s protocol powers parts of WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, using the Signal app directly provides the most privacy.

Tip Lines

Cross-Platform

Hush Line is our secure whistleblowing platform, built to support journalists, legal teams, business leaders, and more. It’s free, open-source, and easy to set up with integrated Proton support, offering an efficient way to start or manage secure reporting. Check our directory of verified users to be sure you’re reaching the right people.

Conclusion

You don’t need to dive down a rabbit hole of privacy tools. Take a few simple steps to protect yourself and avoid the FUD. Have questions? Reach out on Mastodon or Hush Line.
